Desktop computer maker Dell says it has formally closed its acquisition of data storage firm Compellent Technologies in a $940 million (£584 million) deal.
Dell wants to use Compellent's product range to create the leading storage player in the industry. The firm will join Dell's other recent acquisitions, EqualLogic and PowerVault.
The deal is part of Dell's move into the data management sector, offering its customers more tools with which to reduce the costs of storing IT equipment and making the management of IT infrastructure, like data centres, easier for firms.
Dell's move to buy Compellent is effectively its response to losing out to major rival Hewlett-Packard (HP) in the exciting race to acquire 3Par last year.
"Compellent complements our storage portfolio by providing next-generation storage solutions and proactive support that help enterprise customers optimize and automate the management and protection of their data," said Brad Anderson, senior vice president, Dell Enterprise Product Group.
