Computer firm Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced the signing of a five year, $400 million (£258 million) outsourcing deal with British Petroleum (BP).

HP will deliver data centre services so that BP can consolidate its hosting capabilities and branch into cloud computing.

While HP already equips BP's data centres in the UK, the new deal will see that provision extend to the firm's remaining European centres and all those in the Americas under one single contract.

"By establishing a standardised global operating model, BP will realise immediate cost reductions, improved consistency of service and be well positioned to utilise emerging technologies," said Dana S. Deasy, group vice president and chief information officer, BP.

HP recently signed a similar deal with energy firm E.ON.

That agreement will see HP provide the utilities firm with infrastructure technology as part five-year, $1.4 billion contract.

HP will provide data centre operations and workplace services for over 80,000 E.ON employees.
