Calix, a broadband services provider based in California, will acquire Occam Networks, also in California, a provider of broadband solutions, for $171 (£107) million, or $7.75 per outstanding share.
Calix will now strengthen its position in the communications market, offering broadband providers in North America, the Caribbean and Latin America a developed set of access products.
It is thought that the acquisition will mean that increased access options, such as high-speed internet, VoIP, and Ethernet, over both fibre and copper routes, will be available for communications services providers.
"The rate of change is accelerating for communications service providers, and Calix is fully committed to providing our customers with the broadest portfolio of innovative access network options to adapt to this changing world," said Carl Russo, president and chief executive officer of the firm.
The transaction is forecast to complete during either the fourth quarter of this year or the first quarter of 2011 and is subject to customary regulatory approval.
This month Calix announced it had delivered over one million fibre access ports to its customers to date.
