Google's acquisition of AdMob has been given the go-ahead to proceed after the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) put its seal of approval on the move.

The acquisition is thought to be worth over £500 million and will merge two of the biggest advertisement companies in the sector, raising concerns with the regulator.

In a statement, the FTC said: "The decision was a difficult one because the parties (Google and AdMob) currently are the two leading mobile advertising networks and the commission was concerned about the loss of head-to-head competition between them."

It is thought that the emergence of Apple into the sector and the growing success of its own advertisement programme, iAd, helped assuage fears of Google-AdMob dominance.

The news follows Google's acquisition of On2 Technologies, a provider of advanced video compression services and Global IP Solutions (GIPS), a Norwegian telecoms firm.
