Apple has acquired Texan fables semiconductor firm Intrinsity, the maker of the chip which some commentators have suggested is behind the A4 iPad processor.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Tom Halfhill, senior editor at Microprocessor Report, has stated that he believes the purchase price stood at $121 million (£79.5 million).
"This adds another arrow to their quiver," Mr Halfhill told the New York Times.
"The purchase price is like pocket change to Apple, and they get a lot of benefit."
According to the newspaper, Intrinsity has been working with Samsung to manufacture chips for the iPad, meaning that the acquisition deal could allow Apple to keep the processor's 1,000 megahertz speed to itself.
Apple introduced the iPad in January, describing the product as its "most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device" and selling more than 300,000 units on the weekend it was launched.
