Mobile phone firm Nokia has announced the acquisition of MetaCarta, a Massachusetts-based company offering geographic intelligence solutions.
Although financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the world's biggest handset maker has stated that "MetaCarta's technology will be used in the area of local search in Location and other services".
MetaCarta, which was founded in 2001, provides technology that combines geographic search and tagging capabilities, allowing users to find content about a certain location by viewing results on a map.
It follows on from Nokia's acquisition of Novarra earlier this month, a provider of high-performance mobile internet browsers and platforms, which the company plans to integrate into its Series 40 range of mobile phones.
In February, MetaCarta announced record growth in its business during the fourth quarter of 2009, following on from a successful third quarter to increase sales by 100 per cent compared with the same period in 2008.
