Broadcom, a company which manufactures semiconductors for wired and wireless communication applications, has announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire switch fabric solutions firm Dune Networks.

Dune Networks has developed a scalable chipset that supports bandwidth speeds of up to 100Gbps per port and is capable of connecting more than 10,000 servers in a single deployment.

After paying approximately $178 million (£107 million) to acquire all the outstanding shares of capital stock and other rights of Dune Networks, Broadcom will use the technology to meet emerging requirements for cloud computing networks.

"Dune's massively scalable interconnectfabric, combined with our Ethernet products, augments our portfolio of solutions for data centre networking equipment," added Martin Lund, vice-president and general manager of Broadcom Network Switching.

Earlier in the year, Broadcom abandoned its efforts to acquire storage networking business Emulex after the latter rejected an all-cash offer of $11 (£6.60) per share.ADNFCR-1833-ID-19489338-ADNFCR
