The Middle East and Africa's leading mobile telecoms provider Zain has signed a five-year strategic managed services deal with Ericsson.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will be responsible for the network operations, field operations and third-party vendor management at more than 4,000 sites across Nigeria.

As part of the deal, around 450 Zain employees will be transferred to Ericsson, where they will be given further training in the latest wireless technologies.

Lars Linden, president of Ericsson's sub-Saharan Africa division, said the agreement will help Zain to deliver significant financial and operational efficiencies.

He commented: "Managed services is one of the fastest-growing areas in telecoms and Nigeria is demonstrating strong growth and increased levels of investment and competition.

"The synergies between the two companies will ensure best-in-class network stability and market support."

Last month Ericsson signed an agreement with the Irish operator Meteor Mobile Communications for the supply of a WCDMA/HSPA network including microwave transmission.ADNFCR-1833-ID-19214963-ADNFCR
