MEMC Electronics Materials is reported to have received a takeover offer by BASF.
The firm, which manufactures silicon wafers for the semiconductor and solar industries, saw its share price rise following speculation German firm BASF launched a takeover offer for it.
It is rumoured that MEMC has received a $27-a-share offer from the chemicals company.
One industry analyst told Reuters that he believes the story is "primarily a rumour".
Gordon Johnson, from Hapoalim Securities, said: "I don't think that MEMC is looked at as an acquisition target because its key end markets are facing significant pressure and I think that any buyer who knows these markets will know that MEMC will reach a lower price later this year."
Forbes recently named MEMC as one of the 400 Best Big Companies in the world.
It was the first year the firm had appeared on the news provider's annual list.
