Regent - the IT corporate finance specialist - has said that with the introduction of server farms the price of computers could be set to plummet.

Peter Rowell, executive chairman at Regent Partners, was speaking at the Intellect Annual Regent Conference 2009, which examined the coming trends in the IT sector.

Mr Rowell stressed the impact of the remote computing infrastructure being put in place by big-name firms such as Google and Amazon could have for the industry.

The Regent executive chairman commented: "It's going to have a significant effect on the industry and it has not been brought about by technology, it's been brought about by economics.

"The price of computing is going to drop and drop rapidly when this happens."

Remote, or cloud computing looks to be a big trend over the coming months.

Speculation has surrounded the search giant Google's touted offering, the GDrive, a remote access server which some have suggested could spell the end for personal computers.
