Nokia and Qualcomm are to join forces to work on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System devices, with an initial aim of servicing the North American market.

The devices will use Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem for its processing and broadband capabilities and will be based on the S60 smartphone software.

Expected launch date of the devices is mid-2010 and the products will be compatible with the forthcoming Symbian Foundation platform.

Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice-president of Qualcomm, comments: "Nokia and Qualcomm are leaders in advanced wireless technologies, and this new level of cooperation would bring exceptional leaps in mobile performance to people around the world."

Kai Oistamo, executive vice-president of devices at Nokia says he is "pleased" with the tie-up.

The announcement suggests a new era of friendship may be dawning between the former arch-rivals.

Previously, Nokia and Qualcomm have clashed over copyright infringements, a dispute which was only resolved last year.
