Strong firms will "eat the weak", leading to an increase in mergers and acquisitions despite the difficult financial times, it is reported.
At this week's World Economic Forum meeting of business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, one industry expert said communications firms will "go through a big consolidation phase", Reuters states.
Mark Foster, global head of management consulting at Accenture, comments: "We're going to see further waves of consolidation as weaker players are taken over by stronger players."
Firms will be out bargain hunting for the best merger and acquisition deals, the news provider adds.
It points out that big deals that offer big cost reductions are particularly attractive in the current economic climate.
Tony Poulter, global head of consulting at PricewaterhouseCoopers, states that people will be looking for opportunities but remain risk-averse at the same time.
New alliances between industries and stakeholders will be the key to success and growth, the forum revealed in a report this week.
It advised firms to focus on innovative strategies.
