Tiscali has confirmed that it is holding talks with British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) with a view to the latter acquiring the Italian firm's UK assets.
In a statement to the Milan stock exchange the firm stated that " it is currently holding talks with the BSkyB in relation to certain UK assets".
A successful takeover of the broadband provider's business in the country would see BSkyB become the biggest firm in the British market, one analyst told the Financial Times.
Ian Watt, telecoms analyst for Enders Analysis, told the newspaper the firms potential for growth would see it surpass Carphone Warehouse, BT and Virgin if the deal goes through.
"That could give it the scale necessary to do deals with BT on a wholesale basis for higher speed broadband access with what is called fibre-to-the-cabinet," he said.
In turn, this could lead to connection speeds of 40Mbps, which would help it compete with Virgin.
BSkyB was formed in 1990 when Sky Television took over British Satellite Broadcasting.
