A full takeover of Sony Ericsson by Sony is possible in the near future, it has emerged.
The firm has today (October 14th) confirmed it will shift all of its production throughout 2012 to the smartphone sector as it seeks to challenge market leader Apple in this area ahead of a potential full acquisition of the firm by Sony.
A source close the proposal has told Retuers that talks are underway for Sony to purchase Ericsson's 50 per cent stake in the company.
During an interview with the news source, chief executive officer Bert Nordberg admitted something needs to be done to improve consumer confidence in the brand.
These comments have fuelled speculation among industry insiders that a full acquisition deal between the two parties is imminent.
Meanwhile, official turnover figures for the third quarter of the year released today by Sony Ericsson show why the firm is eager to concentrate on smartphones, as the devices accounted for 80 per cent of its sales during this period.
