Merger and acquisition activity in the software sector has increased during the first half of the year, according to new research.
Independent investment banking advisory firm Berkery Noyes has revealed that total transaction volume rose one per cent in the first six months of the year compared to the second half of 2010.
"The software space clearly recovered from what was a slow first quarter," said Chris Young, managing director of Berkery Noyes.
"Eight of the period's top ten transactions were actually announced in the last three months."
Four of the transactions concluded during the quarter were valued at over $1 billion (£621 million), with Microsoft's $9.1 billion purchase of online phone service Skype the largest of the period.
Internet giant Google carried out nine transactions across the first half of 2011, making it the most active company in terms of merger and acquisition activity during the period. Google carried out the most acquisitions in the software sector in 2010.
