Talks are underway between private equity firm Providence Equity Partners and Blackboard Inc, which provides learning software to schools and businesses.
The Wall Street Journal reported that a source close to the matter said a deal may be made between the two companies as early as next week.
It follows news that Blackboard Inc had kept on financial advisers after talks surrounding non-binding acquisition proposals the company had received earlier this year.
The news provider reported that Washington-based Blackboard had received interest from several parties, but that in the end it had come down to a battle between private equity firms.
Blackboard Inc provides software to help with all aspects of learning and development, offering services including mobile and analytics. One interesting software package it offers is Blackboard Transact, which helps to create a cashless environment for campuses.
